The number of Muslims who witnessed the conquest of Makkah
Translation
✧ [Būdail's poetry in reply to Ibn Zunaim] And Budayl b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Umm Aṣram replied to him, saying: Anas wept with a loud wailing, so the weeping made him lament — would that ʿAdī were not — when blood is shed and he is far. You wept for Abū ʿAbs because their blood was near, so you would be excused, since no kindler kindles war. On the day of al-Khanādim, noble youths struck them — ask, among them Nufayl and Maʿbad. There, if your tears are shed, you are not blamed for them; and if the eye does not weep, then be grieved. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are in a poem of his. [Bujair's poetry on the day of the conquest] Ibn Isḥāq said: Bujayr b. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā said on the day of the conquest: Muzaynah at dawn and Banū Khufāf expelled the people of al-Ḥaballaq from every mountain pass. We struck them at Makkah on the day of the conquest of the Prophet of good, with white, slender swords. We assailed them in the morning with seven hundred from Sulaym and a thousand from Banū ʿUthmān, complete. We struck their shoulders with blows and thrusts and shots with feathered, light arrows. You see among the ranks a rustling from them, like the whizzing of the arrow's notch from the Riṣāf reeds. And we departed while the steeds coursed among them, with straightened lances, well-balanced. So we returned booty-laden with what we desired, and they returned regretful of their opposition. And we gave to the Messenger of God, from us, our covenants, upon the best of sincerity. And they had heard our speech, so they resolved on the morning of terror to withdraw from us.
