The affair of al-Aswad the shepherd in the account of Khaybar
Translation
✧ The matter of al-Aswad the shepherd in the report of Khaybar [his acceptance of Islam and his martyrdom] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the account of al-Aswad the shepherd, as it reached me, is that he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was besieging one of the forts of Khaybar, and with him were sheep of his, for which he was a hired worker for a man of the Jews. He said, "O Messenger of God, present Islam to me." He presented it to him, and he became a Muslim—and the Messenger of God ﷺ never disdained anyone to call him to Islam and present it to him. When he became a Muslim, he said, "O Messenger of God, I was a hired worker for the owner of these sheep, and they are a trust in my possession. What should I do with them?" He said, "Strike them in their faces, for they will return to their master"—or as he said. Al-Aswad said: So he took a handful of pebbles and threw them in their faces, and said, "Return to your owner, for by God, I will never accompany you again." They went out gathered together, as if a driver were driving them, until they entered the fort. Then he advanced toward that fort to fight alongside the Muslims, and a stone struck him and killed him, and he had never prayed a single prayer to God. He was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and was placed behind him and covered with a cloak that was upon him. The Messenger of God ﷺ turned to him, and with him were a number of his companions, then turned away from him. They said, "O Messenger of God, why did you turn away from him?" He said, "With him now are his two wives from the ḥūr al-ʿīn." Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ informed me that it was mentioned to him that when a martyr is struck down, his two wives from the ḥūr al-ʿīn lean down to him, brushing the dust from his face, and say, "May God soil the face of the one who soiled you, and may He kill the one who killed you."
