The Messenger's reconciliation with the people of Khaybar

Translation

✧ [The poetry of Ibn Luqaym on the conquest of Khaybar] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ, as I have been told, had given Ibn Luqaym al-ʿAbsī, when he conquered Khaybar, whatever it contained of chickens or domestic fowl. The conquest of Khaybar was in Ṣafar, so Ibn Luqaym al-ʿAbsī said about Khaybar: Naṭāh was shot at from the Messenger with a gleaming, grey host, possessing shoulders and vertebrae. And it became certain of humiliation when it was spread about, while the men of Aslam and Ghifār were in its midst. It came upon Banū ʿAmr b. Zurʿah in the morning, while al-Shaqq's people were darkest in daylight. It dragged its trains through its valley and left nothing but chickens crying out in the pre-dawn hours. And for every fort there was an occupier from their horsemen, from ʿAbd al-Ashhal or Banū al-Najjār. And Emigrants who had marked their signs above their helmets, and did not flag in fleeing. And I knew that Muḥammad would surely prevail, and would surely settle there until the yellow months. The Jews fled on that day in the battle, under the dust, the veils of the eyes. [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some obscure words] Ibn Hishām said: "farrat" means "uncovered," as a beast is said to "farra" when it bares its teeth; he means they uncovered the veils of the eyes, meaning the veils of sight, that is, the helpers (al-anṣār).
