Translation
✧ [Qunuṣ b. Maʿadd and the lineage of al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Qunuṣ b. Maʿadd, the remainder of them perished—according to what the genealogists of Maʿadd claim—and from them was al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, king of al-Ḥīrah. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Muslim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Shihāb al-Zuhrī related to me that al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir was of the descendants of Qunuṣ b. Maʿadd. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said Qanaṣ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas related to me, from a shaykh of the Anṣār of the Banū Zurayq, that he related to him: that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ, when the sword of al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir was brought to him, summoned Jubayr b. Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy—and Jubayr was among the most knowledgeable of Quraysh regarding the genealogy of Quraysh and of the Arabs altogether, and he used to say: “I took genealogy only from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ, and Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq was the most knowledgeable of the Arabs in genealogy”—and he armed him with it, then said: “Of whom was al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, O Jubayr?” He said: “He was of the remnants of Qunuṣ b. Maʿadd.” Ibn Isḥāq said: As for the rest of the Arabs, they claim that he was a man of Lakhm, of the descendants of Rabīʿah b. Naṣr. God knows best which of these was the case. [The lineage of Lakhm b. ʿAdī] Ibn Hishām said: Lakhm: ibn ʿAdī b. al-Ḥārith b. Murrah b. Udad b. Zayd b. Humaysiʿ b. ʿAmr b. ʿArīb b. Yashjub b. Zayd b. Kaḥlān b. Sabaʾ, and it is said: Lakhm: ibn ʿAdī b. ʿAmr b. Sabaʾ, and it is said: Rabīʿah b. Naṣr b. Abī Ḥārithah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir, and he remained behind in Yemen after the departure of ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir from Yemen
