Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān] Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī answered him, saying: Is the trace of an effaced abode, a desolate station, Speaking to a converser with an answer? A barren land whose traces the copious rain of the clouds effaced, And the blowing of every pouring, rain-laden wind. I indeed saw the dwellers there, adorned by White faces and lofty, shining lineages. So leave the abodes and the mention of every shy maiden, White, cheerful in speech, full-breasted, And complain of your griefs to God, and what you see Of a company who wronged the Messenger, wrathful. They marched with all of them to him and incited The people of the towns and the desert Arabs, The army of ʿUyaynah and Ibn Ḥarb among them, Arrogant with the muster of the confederates, Until, when they reached Madinah and hoped for The killing of the Messenger and the spoils of the plunder, And came against us in the morning, able with their hands, They were turned back in their rage upon their heels By the blowing of a violent wind that scattered their host, And the soldiers of your Lord, Master of lords. God sufficed the believers their fighting, And rewarded them, in recompense, with the best reward, After they had despaired; then His sending down of victory scattered their host— The victory of our King, the Bestower. He gladdened the eye of Muḥammad and his companions, And abased every denying, doubting one— Rebellious of heart, fallen into doubt, In unbelief, not pure of garments. Wretchedness clung to his heart, so his heart Is in unbelief to the last of these ages.
