The matter of the baḥīrah, the sāʾibah, the waṣīlah, and the ḥāmī
قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَلَمَّا بَعَثَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى رَسُولَهُ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ أَنَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ: مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ بَحِيرَةٍ وَلَا سَائِبَةٍ وَلَا وَصِيلَةٍ وَلَا حَامٍ وَلَكِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَقَالُوا مَا فِي بُطُونِ هَذِهِ الْأَنْعَامِ خَالِصَةٌ لِذُكُورِنَا وَمُحَرَّمٌ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِنَا وَإِنْ يَكُنْ مَيْتَةً فَهُمْ فِيهِ شُرَكَاءُ سَيَجْزِيهِمْ وَصْفَهُمْ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ. وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ: قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ مِنْ رِزْقٍ فَجَعَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ حَرَامًا وَحَلَالًا قُلْ آللَّهُ أَذِنَ لَكُمْ أَمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ تَفْتَرُونَ وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ: مِنَ الضَّأْنِ اثْنَيْنِ وَمِنَ الْمَعْزِ اثْنَيْنِ قُلْ آلذَّكَرَيْنِ حَرَّمَ أَمِ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ أَمَّا اشْتَمَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ أَرْحَامُ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ نَبِّئُونِي بِعِلْمٍ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ وَمِنَ الْإِبِلِ اثْنَيْنِ وَمِنَ الْبَقَرِ اثْنَيْنِ قُلْ آلذَّكَرَيْنِ حَرَّمَ أَمِ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ أَمَّا اشْتَمَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ أَرْحَامُ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ أَمْ كُنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءَ إِذْ وَصَّاكُمُ اللَّهُ بِهَذَا فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَى عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا لِيُضِلَّ النَّاسَ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ.
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: When God, blessed and exalted be He, sent His Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ, He revealed to him: “God has not ordained any baḥīrah, sāʾibah, waṣīlah, or ḥāmī; but those who disbelieve fabricate lies against God, and most of them do not understand.” And God, exalted be He, revealed: “And they say, 'What is in the bellies of these cattle is reserved for our males and forbidden to our wives; but if it is born dead, they are partners in it.' He will recompense them for their description. Indeed, He is Wise, Knowing.” And He revealed to him: “Say, 'Have you seen what God has sent down for you of provision, and you have made of it unlawful and lawful?' Say, 'Has God permitted you, or do you fabricate against God?'” And He revealed to him: “Of the sheep, two, and of the goats, two. Say, 'Has He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you are truthful.' And of the camels, two, and of the cattle, two. Say, 'Has He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when God enjoined this upon you?' So who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against God to mislead people without knowledge? Indeed, God does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
