Sirat Ibn Hisham 105

What the Arabs used to do with the idols

Translation

✧ Dhu al-Khalasah, its custodians, and its destruction Ibn Ishaq said: Dhu al-Khalasah belonged to Daws, Khathʿam, and Bajilah, and those Arabs who were in their lands at Tabalah. Ibn Hisham said: It is also said “Dhu al-Khulusah.” A man from the Arabs said: If only you, O Dhu al-Khulus, the bereft of revenge, were like me, and your elder were the buried one, you would not forbid the killing of enemies falsely. He said: His father had been killed, so he wanted to seek his vengeance. He came to Dhu al-Khalasah and sought a decision there by the divining arrows. The arrow came out forbidding him from that, so he said these verses. Some people attribute them to Imruʾ al-Qays b. Hujr al-Kindi. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Jarir b. ʿAbd Allah al-Bajali to it, and he destroyed it.
