Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud
قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: أَنْشَدَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ لِلْحَجَّاحِ بْنِ عِلَاطٍ السُّلَمِيِّ يَمْدَحُ ( أَبَا الْحَسَنِ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ) عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَيَذْكُرُ قَتْلَهُ طَلْحَةَ بْنَ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الدَّارِ، صَاحِبِ لِوَاءِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ: لِلَّهِ أَيُّ مُذَبِّبٍ عَنْ حُرْمَةٍ أَعْنِي ابْنَ فَاطِمَةَ الْمُعَمَّ الْمُخْوِلَا سَبَقَتْ يَدَاكَ لَهُ بِعَاجِلِ طَعْنَةٍ تَرَكَتْ طُلَيْحَةَ لِلْجَبِينِ مُجَدَّلَا وَشَدَدْتَ شَدَّةَ بَاسِلٍ فَكَشَفْتهمْ بِالْجَرِّ إذْ يَهْوُونَ أَخْوَلَ أَخْوَلَا
Translation
✧ Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me for al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ al-Sulamī, praising Abū al-Ḥasan, the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and mentioning his killing of Ṭalḥah b. Abī Ṭalḥah b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd al-Dār, the bearer of the banner of the polytheists on the day of Uḥud: For God, what a defender of the sacred precinct! I mean the son of Fāṭimah, the uncle on the maternal side, the noble on both sides. Your two hands preceeded for him with a swift thrust that left Ṭulayḥah stretched out on his brow. And you pressed the charge of a brave man and scattered them in the rout, when they fell one after another.
