Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation
✧ Hassan b. Thabit's poetry concerning the standard-bearers. Hassan b. Thabit said, mentioning the number of the standard-bearers on the day of Uḥud: Ibn Hisham said: This is the finest thing composed on the subject: Sorrows forbade sleep at nightfall, and a phantom when the stars set, from a beloved one from whom a sickness has entered your heart, so it is hidden within. O my people, can the like of me be slain, weak of grip and of bones, weary? If the yearling ant crawled upon her, the wounds would mark her. Her concern is perfume and the couch, and she is adorned with silver and strung pearls. The sun of day has missed nothing in her except that youth does not last. My maternal uncle is the orator of Jābiyat al-Jawlān before al-Nuʿmān when he stands, and I am the falcon at the gate of Ibn Salmā, on the day of Nuʿmān, sick in fetters. And Ubayy and Wāqid were released for me on the day they went forth, their shackles bound. I pledged both hands for them all, every palm allotted its share. My lineage ascended to the forelocks among them, every abode in which I have a noble father. And Ubayy is in Sumayḥa, the decisive sayer on the day when the adversaries met against him. Those are our deeds, and the deed of al-Zibaʿrā is obscure, blamed in his friend. Many a forbearance has been ruined by lack of wealth, and ignorance has been covered over by ease. Do not revile me, for you are not one to revile me; reviling me belongs to noble men. I care not whether a billy goat bleats in rugged ground or a base man slanders me behind my back. I took on the might among you when you departed: a line of pure stock from Banū Quṣayy. Nine carried the standard, and a snub-nosed one flew amid a rabble of spears. And they stood firm until they were all slain in one station, and all of them were blamed, with dark blood, and it was a protection that they stood firm: the noble one is noble. And they stood firm until they were made to visit Shuʿūb, the spears shattered in their throats. And Quraysh fled from us, turning aside from standing firm, and their minds grew light. The young women among them could not bear it; it is only the stars who carry the standard. Ibn Hisham said: Hassan composed this poem, 'Sorrows forbade sleep at nightfall,' by night, and he called his people and said to them: I feared that my appointed time would overtake me before morning, so that you would not transmit it from me.
