machine translationThis hadith was mentioned to Ibn Mahdī, and he said: Abū Mawdūd dictated to me: a man narrated to me from a man that he heard Abān b. ʿUthmān, from ʿUthmān, from the Prophet ﷺ. And he denied that it was from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī. Abū Muḥammad informed us, he said: my father narrated to me, he said: Ḥammād b. Zādhān narrated to us, he said: Ibn Mahdī narrated to us from his book, which he dictated to us, and that was because ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: two men in Medina narrated to me from Abū Mawdūd, from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb. So Ibn Mahdī said: It is false. Then Ibn Mahdī brought out his book and dictated it to us. Abū Muḥammad informed us, he said: Aḥmad b. ʿIṣām narrated to us from Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī, as Ibn Mahdī narrated it, he said: Abū ʿĀmir, meaning al-ʿAqadī, narrated to us, he said: Abū Mawdūd narrated to us, he said: a man narrated to me, he said: one who heard Abān b. ʿUthmān narrated to me, he said: I heard ʿUthmān say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say... As for what ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said, Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā informed us, he said: Anas b. ʿIyāḍ informed us from Abū Mawdūd, from a man whom I only know to be Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, from Abān b. ʿUthmān that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said... and he did not mention ʿUthmān in the chain. Abū Muḥammad said: There are two named Abū Mawdūd; one of them is named Fiḍḍah and the other is ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Sulaymān.

machine translationThis is a mistake, and the correct one is what al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us, he said: Abū Mawdūd narrated to us from a man, he said: one who heard Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān narrated to us, saying: I heard ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say... and he mentioned the hadith.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAbū Mawdūd ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Sulaymān narrated it from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, and there is disagreement about him. Abū Ḍamrah narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, from Abān b. ʿUthmān, from ʿUthmān, and Khālid b. Yazīd al-ʿUmarī followed him. Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb differed from them and narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, who said: one who heard Abān narrated to me, without naming anyone. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī and Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī differed from them, and narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, who said: a man narrated to me from one who heard Abān b. ʿUthmān, from ʿUthmān. This last version is the one preserved from Abū Mawdūd, and whoever said in it "from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī" has made an error. This was said by Abū Ḍamrah Anas b. ʿIyāḍ. Al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl and others narrated to us from al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, from Abū Ḍamrah. Abū al-Zinād also narrated this hadith from Abān b. ʿUthmān, from his father; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād narrated it from his father. This is connected (muttaṣil), and it is the best of them in chain.
