أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْحُومُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نَعَامَةَ السَّعْدِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ
خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ؟ قَالُوا جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ قَالَ آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَلِكَ؟ قَالُوا وَاللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ «مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ؟ » قَالُوا جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا هَدَانَا لِلْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ قَالَ «آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَلِكَ؟ » قَالُوا وَاللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ قَالَ «أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ وَلَكِنْ جِبْرِيلُ أَتَانِي فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ»

✧ Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan came out upon a circle in the mosque and said: "What makes you sit?" They said: "We have sat to remember Allah." He said: "By Allah, has nothing made you sit except that?" They said: "By Allah, nothing has made us sit except that." He said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out upon a circle of his Companions and said: 'What makes you sit?' They said: 'We have sat to remember Allah and to praise Him for having guided us to Islam and bestowed it upon us as a favor.' He said: 'By Allah, has nothing made you sit except that?' They said: 'By Allah, nothing has made us sit except that.' He said: 'Indeed, I did not make you swear because I suspected you, but Jibril came to me and informed me that Allah is boasting of you to the angels.'"
