✧ I said to Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī: Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about this verse: {Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims}? He said: Yes, I heard him say: “Allah will bring out some people from among the believers from the Fire after He has taken His vengeance upon them. He said: When Allah admitted them into the Fire along with the polytheists, the polytheists said: ‘Were you not claiming in the world that you were allies? So what is with you that you are with us in the Fire?’ When Allah heard that from them, He permitted intercession, and the angels and prophets interceded for them until they came out by Allah’s permission. When they were brought out, they said: ‘Would that we were like them, so that intercession might reach us and we might be brought out of the Fire.’ That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Exalted: {Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims}. He said: So they are called in Paradise ‘the Jahannamīs’ because of blackness in their faces. They say: ‘Our Lord, remove this name from us.’ He said: So He commands them, and they bathe in a river in Paradise, and that goes away from them.”
