✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ in a group from ʿAbd al-Qays to visit him. They approached, and when they arrived, the Prophet ﷺ was raised for them. They made their mounts kneel, and the people hurried off, wearing only their traveling clothes. Al-ʿAṣarī stayed behind, hobbled the mounts of his companions and his own camel, then took out his clothes from his saddlebag—all this under the eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "You have two qualities that Allah and His Messenger love." He said, "What are they?" He said, "Deliberateness and forbearance." He said, "Is it something I was created with, or something I have acquired?" He said, "No, rather you were created with it." He said, "Praise be to Allah." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "O people of ʿAbd al-Qays, why do I see your faces have changed?" They said, "O Prophet of Allah, we live in a land with unhealthy climate, and we used to take some of these beverages that cut the meat in our stomachs. When we were forbidden from containers, that is what you see in our faces." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Containers do not make things lawful or unlawful, but every intoxicant is unlawful. It is not that you should hold back and drink until your veins swell, then you fight one another, and a man jumps on his cousin and strikes him with a sword, leaving him crippled." He said: And on that day among the people was the crippled man who had suffered that.
