✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished with Ḥunayn, he sent Abū ʿĀmir at the head of an army to Awṭās. He met Durayd ibn al-Ṣimmah and killed Durayd, and Allah routed his companions. Abū ʿĀmir was shot in his knee by a man from Banū Jusham with an arrow, which lodged in his knee. I came to him and said, "O uncle, who shot you?" He pointed and said, "That is my killer," meaning the one who shot me. Abū Mūsā said: I made for him and caught up with him. When he saw me, he turned and fled, and I followed him, saying, "Are you not ashamed? Will you not stand firm? Are you not ashamed? Are you not an Arab?" He stopped, and we met and exchanged blows. I struck him with my sword and killed him. Then I returned and said, "Allah has killed your companion." He said, "Pull out this arrow." I pulled it out, and water flowed from the wound. He said, "O son of my brother, go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and convey my greetings to him, and tell him: he says to you, 'Ask forgiveness for me.'" He said: Abū ʿĀmir appointed me as his deputy and remained a short while, then he died. When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I entered upon him while he was in a house on a bed, and the bed had left marks on the back and sides of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I informed him of our news and the news of Abū ʿĀmir, and I said to him, "He said: tell him to ask forgiveness for me." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for water, performed ablution, raised his hands, and then said, "O Allah, forgive ʿUbayd Abū ʿĀmir. O Allah, make him on the Day of Resurrection above many of Your creation." I said, "And for me, O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, forgive ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays his sin and admit him to a noble entrance."
