✧ I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, and indeed I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while with him was only me and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. 'Abd al-Muttalib. We stayed close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not part from him. He was on a gray mule (and perhaps he said: white) that Farwah b. Nufathah al-Judhami had gifted to him. When the Muslims and the disbelievers met, the Muslims turned back in retreat, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began spurring his mule toward the disbelievers. Al-'Abbas said: I was holding the bridle of the mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, restraining it, while he did not slacken in hurrying toward the polytheists, and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith was holding the stirrup strap of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O 'Abbas, call: 'O companions of the samurah tree! (the tree under which the pledge of Ridwan was taken)'" I was a man with a loud voice, and I said at the top of my voice: "O companions of the samurah tree!" By Allah, it was as if their turning when they heard my voice was the turning of a cow toward its calves, saying: "Here we are, here we are." The Muslims came back and fought the disbelievers. The Ansar called out: "O assembly of the Ansar!" Then the call was restricted to the tribe of Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, and they called: "O Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj!" He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked while he was on his mule as if leaning over it toward their fighting. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is the time when the battle has grown hot." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took some pebbles and threw them at the faces of the disbelievers and said: "They have been defeated, by the Lord of the Ka'bah! They have been defeated, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" He said: I went to look, and the fighting was as it had been as far as I could see. By Allah, it was only that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw his pebbles at them, and I saw their force only dwindling, and their affair only in retreat, until Allah defeated them. He said: It is as if I am looking at the Prophet ﷺ spurring after them on his mule.
