✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched the army of commanders. He said: "Zayd b. Harithah is over you. If Zayd is struck, then Ja'far; if Ja'far is struck, then 'Abdullah b. Rawahah." So Ja'far jumped up and said: "May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah! I was not reluctant that you appoint Zayd over me." He said: "Go, for you do not know in which of that is good." So they set off and remained as long as Allah willed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and ordered that it be announced: "Prayer is to be performed in congregation." He said: "Shall I not inform you about this expedition of yours that has gone forth? They set off and met the enemy. Zayd was struck as a martyr. Seek forgiveness for him." The people sought forgiveness for him. "Then Ja'far b. Abi Talib took the banner and pressed upon the people until he was killed as a martyr. Seek forgiveness for him. Then 'Abdullah b. Rawahah took the banner, and his feet were firm until he was killed as a martyr. Seek forgiveness for him. Then Khalid b. al-Walid took the banner, and he was not one of the commanders; he appointed himself." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his upper arms and said: "O Allah, he is a sword among Your swords; give victory through him." From that day on, Khalid b. al-Walid was called the Sword of Allah.
