✧ Four verses were revealed concerning me. I obtained a sword and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of God, grant it to me as a gift.” He said, “Put it down.” Then I said, “O Messenger of God, grant it to me and consider me as one who has no need of it.” He said, “Put it back where you took it.” Then this verse was revealed: {They ask you about the spoils of war}. A man from the Ansar prepared food and invited us, and we drank wine until we became intoxicated. The Ansar and Quraysh boasted to one another. The Ansar said, “We are better than you,” and Quraysh said, “We are better.” A man from the Ansar took the jawbone of a slaughtered camel and struck Sa‘d’s nose, splitting it. Sa‘d’s nose remained split. He said: Then this verse was revealed: {Wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are only defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may succeed}. Sa‘d’s mother said, “Has God not commanded kindness? By God, I will not eat food or drink drink until I die or you disbelieve.” He said: When they wanted to feed her, they would pry open her mouth with a stick. Then this verse was revealed: {We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents}—the verse. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon me while I was ill, visiting me. I said, “O Messenger of God, shall I bequeath all my wealth?” He said, “No.” I said, “Then two-thirds?” He said, “No.” I said, “Then half?” He said, “No.” I said, “Then a third?” He said: Then he fell silent.
