✧ I never saw Quraysh wanting to kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except on a day I saw them while they were sitting in the shade of the Kaʿba and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying near the Maqām. ʿUqba b. Abī Muʿayṭ stood up to him and put his cloak around his neck and pulled it until he fell to his knees ﷺ. People shouted, thinking he was killed. Abū Bakr ؓ came hurrying until he grabbed the upper arms of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from behind, saying, 'Would you kill a man for saying my Lord is Allah?' Then they turned away from the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and when he finished his prayer, he passed by them while they were sitting in the shade of the Kaʿba and said, 'O assembly of Quraysh, by the One in whose hand is my soul, I was not sent to you except with slaughter.' He gestured with his hand to his throat. Abū Jahl said to him, 'O Muhammad, you were not ignorant.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You are one of them.'
