أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْغَفَّارِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ ذَرٍّ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ

وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَعْتَمِدُ بِكَبِدِي عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْجُوعِ وَلَقَدْ قَعَدْتُ يَوْمًا عَلَى طَرِيقِهِمُ الَّذِي يَخْرُجُونَ فِيهِ فَمَرَّ بِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ آيَةٍ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ مَا سَأَلْتُهُ إِلَّا لِيُشْبِعَنِي فَمَرَّ وَلَمْ يَفْعَلْ وَمَرَّ بِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ آيَةٍ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ مَا سَأَلْتُهُ إِلَّا لِيُشْبِعَنِي فَمَرَّ وَلَمْ يَفْعَلْ حَتَّى مَرَّ بِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا رَأَى مَا بِوَجْهِي وَمَا فِي نَفْسِي قَالَ «أَبَا هِرٍّ» فَقُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَسَعْدَيْكَ قَالَ «الْحَقْ» فَلَحِقْتُهُ فَدَخَلَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَأَذِنَ فَدَخَلْتُ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِلَبَنٍ فِي قَدَحٍ فَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ «مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكُمْ هَذَا؟ » قَالَ هَدِيَّةُ فُلَانٍ أَوْ قَالَ فُلَانٌ فَقَالَ «أَبَا هِرٍّ الْحَقْ إِلَى أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ فَادْعُهُمْ» وَأَهْلُ الصُّفَّةِ أَضْيَافٌ لِأَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ لَا يَأْوُونَ إِلَى أَهْلٍ أَوْ مَالٍ إِذَا أَتَتْهُ صَدَقَةٌ بَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَمْ يُشْرِكْهُمْ فِيهَا وَإِذَا أَتَتْهُ هَدِيَّةٌ بَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَيْهِمْ وَشَرَكَهُمْ فِيهَا وَأَصَابَ مِنْهَا فَسَاءَنِي وَاللَّهِ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ أَيْنَ يَقَعُ هَذَا اللَّبَنُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ وَأَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمْ فَدَخَلُوا وَأَخَذَ الْقَوْمُ مَجَالِسَهُمْ قَالَ «أَبَا هِرٍّ» قُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «خُذْ فَنَاوِلْهُمْ» قَالَ فَجَعَلْتُ أُنَاوَلُ رَجُلًا رَجُلًا فَيَشْرَبُ فَإِذَا رَوِيَ أَخَذْتُهُ فَنَاوَلْتُ الْآخَرَ حَتَّى رَوِيَ الْقَوْمُ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ وَقَالَ «أَبَا هِرٍّ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ» قُلْتُ صَدَقْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «خُذْ فَاشْرَبْ» فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ «اشْرَبْ» حَتَّى قُلْتُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا أَجِدُ لَهُ مَسْلَكًا قَالَ «فَأَرِنِي الْإِنَاءَ» فَأَعْطَيْتُهُ الْإِنَاءَ فَشَرِبَ الْبَقِيَّةَ وَحَمِدَ رَبَّهُ ﷺ

✧ By the One besides whom there is no god, I used to press my belly against the ground from hunger. One day I sat on their path where they would go out. Abu Bakr passed by me, and I asked him about a verse in the Book of Allah, only so that he might feed me; he passed by and did not do it. ʿUmar b. al-Khattab passed by me, and I asked him about a verse in the Book of Allah, only so that he might feed me; he passed by and did not do it. Then Abu al-Qasim ﷺ passed by me, and when he saw what was in my face and soul, he said, "Abu Hirr." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and your pleasure." He said, "Follow." I followed him. He entered upon his family and gave permission, so I entered. There was milk in a bowl. He said to his family, "Where did you get this?" They said, "A gift from so-and-so," or he said, "So-and-so." He said, "Abu Hirr, go to the People of the Suffah and call them." The People of the Suffah were guests of the people of Islam; they did not have family or wealth. When charity came to him, he sent it to them and did not share with them in it; when a gift came to him, he sent it to them and shared with them in it, and he partook of it. By Allah, that saddened me. I said, "Where will this milk be among the People of the Suffah, while I and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are here?" I went and called them. He gave them permission, and they entered and took their seats. He said, "Abu Hirr." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Take and pass it to them." I began passing it to one man, and he would drink. When he was satisfied, I took it and passed it to the next, until all the people were satisfied. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He raised his head and smiled, and said, "Abu Hirr, it is you and I." I said, "You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Take and drink." He kept saying, "Drink," until I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I find no passage for it." He said, "Show me the vessel." I gave him the vessel, and he drank the remainder and praised his Lord ﷺ.
