✧ We returned from Makkah to Madinah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My camel became exhausted, so I lagged behind driving it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was behind attending to a need and caught up with me. He said to me, "Why are you lagging behind?" I said, "Nothing, O Messenger of Allah, except that my camel is lame, and I wanted to catch up with the group." He took hold of its tail, struck it, then urged it on and said, "Mount." I saw myself afterward holding it back from the group. We halted at a place short of Madinah, and I wanted to hurry to my family. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Do not come to your family at night." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am newly married." He said, "To what did you marry?" I said, "A previously married woman." He said, "Why not a virgin whom you could play with and she could play with you?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abdullah died or was martyred and left young daughters, and I disliked marrying someone like them over them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell silent and did not say whether I did well or badly. Then he said, "Sell me this camel of yours." I said, "No, rather it is yours, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "No, sell it to me." I said, "It is yours, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "No, sell it to me." I said, "Yes, for an ounce of gold; it is yours for that." He said, "I have taken it, so ride it to Madinah." When I arrived in Madinah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Bilal, "Give him an ounce of gold and give him more." He gave me an ounce of gold and added a carat. I said, "The increase of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will never leave me." It was in a pouch of mine, and the people of Syria took it on the day of al-Harra.
