أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ قَالَ
كَانَتْ عِنْدَ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ يَتِيمَةٌ فَرَآهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَنْتِ هِيَ؟ لَقَدْ كَبِرْتِ لَا كَبِرَ سِنُّكِ» فَرَجَعَتِ الْيَتِيمَةُ إِلَى أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ تَبْكِي فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ مَا لَكِ يَا بُنَيَّةُ؟ قَالَتِ الْجَارِيَةُ دَعَا عَلَيَّ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ لَا يَكْبَرَ سِنِّي فَالْآنَ لَا يَكْبَرُ سِنِّي أَبَدًا أَوْ قَالَتْ قَرْنَيْ فَخَرَجَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ مُسْتَعْجِلَةً تَلُوثُ خِمَارَهَا حَتَّى لَقِيَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهَا «يَا أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ مَالَكِ؟ » قَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَدَعَوْتَ عَلَى يَتِيمَتِي؟ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَاكَ يَا أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ؟ » قَالَتْ زَعَمَتْ أَنَّكَ دَعَوْتَ عَلَيْهَا أَنْ لَا يَكْبَرَ سِنُّهَا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ «يَا أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ أَمَا تَعْلَمِينَ شَرْطِي عَلَى رَبِّي؟ إِنِّي اشْتَرَطْتُ عَلَى رَبِّي فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ أَرْضَى كَمَا يَرْضَى الْبَشَرُ وَأَغْضَبُ كَمَا يَغْضَبُ الْبَشَرُ فَأَيُّمَا أَحَدٍ دَعَوْتُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي بِدَعْوَةٍ لَيْسَ لَهَا أَهْلٌ أَنْ يَجْعَلَهَا لَهُ طَهُورًا وَزَكَاةً وَقُرْبَةً يُقَرِّبُهُ بِهَا مِنْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ» وَكَانَ ﷺ رَحِيمًا

✧ Umm Sulaym had an orphan girl. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her and said: “Is it you? You have grown up; may your age not grow.” The orphan girl went back to Umm Sulaym weeping. Umm Sulaym said: “What is the matter with you, my little girl?” The girl said: “The Prophet of Allah ﷺ supplicated against me that my age should not grow. Now my age will never grow” or she said “my generation.” Umm Sulaym went out hastily, wrapping her headcover, until she met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said to her: “O Umm Sulaym, what is the matter with you?” She said: “O Prophet of Allah, did you supplicate against my orphan girl?” He said: “And what is that, O Umm Sulaym?” She said: “She claims that you supplicated against her that her age should not grow.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said: “O Umm Sulaym, do you not know my condition with my Lord? I made a condition with my Lord and said: I am only a human; I am pleased as humans are pleased, and I become angry as humans become angry. For any one of my ummah against whom I supplicate with a supplication that he does not deserve, make it for him a purification, an increase, and a means of nearness by which You bring him near to You on the Day of Resurrection.” And he ﷺ was merciful.
