✧ Envoys of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, offering the blood money of each of the two—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr—to anyone who killed or captured them. He said: While I was sitting in a gathering of my people, Banu Mudlij, a man from among them approached until he stood over us and said: "O Suraqah, I just saw some black shapes by the shore; I think they are none other than Muhammad and his companions." Suraqah said: I knew that it was they, so I said: "They are not they; rather, you saw so-and-so and so-and-so. Come with us." Then I remained in the gathering for a while, then I got up and entered my house and ordered my slave girl to bring out my mare, which was behind a hill, and hold her for me. I took my spear and went out with it from the back of the house, then I dragged its butt on the ground and lowered the spearhead until I reached my mare, mounted her, and urged her on, galloping with me until I saw their black shapes. When I drew near enough for them to hear the sound, my mare stumbled with me and I fell from her. I reached for my quiver and took out the divining arrows and cast them, and the one I disliked came out, but I disobeyed the arrows and mounted my mare and urged her on, galloping with me until I heard the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he did not turn around, and Abu Bakr turned around often. Then the forelegs of my mare sank into the ground up to the knees, and I fell from her. I spurred her and she rose, but she could hardly pull out her forelegs. When she stood upright, there was a rising dust cloud in the sky.
