✧ I never knew my parents except that they followed the religion. No day passed over us but that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us at the two ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were tested, Abū Bakr, ؓ, went out as an emigrant toward the land of Abyssinia, and Ibn al-Daghinnah, the chief of al-Qārah, met him and said: Where are you going, O Abū Bakr? He said: My people have expelled me, so I will roam in the land and worship my Lord. Ibn al-Daghinnah said to him: A man like you, O Abū Bakr, should not go out nor be expelled. You earn for the destitute, maintain ties of kinship, entertain the guest, bear the burden of others, and help in the calamities of truth. And I am your protector. So Ibn al-Daghinnah set out and Abū Bakr returned with him. He said to them and went about among the disbelievers of Quraysh: Abū Bakr should not go out nor be expelled. A man like him earns for the destitute, maintains ties of kinship, bears the burden of others, entertains the guest, and helps in the calamities of truth. So Quraysh honored the protection of Ibn al-Daghinnah and gave safety to Abū Bakr, and they said to Ibn al-Daghinnah: Tell Abū Bakr to worship his Lord in his house and pray as much as he wishes and recite as much as he wishes, and not to harm us nor to make public the prayer and recitation outside his house. So Abū Bakr ؓ did that. Then it occurred to Abū Bakr, and he built a mosque in the courtyard of his house, and he used to pray in it and recite the Qurʾān, and the women of the polytheists and their children would stand by him, wondering at him and looking at him. And Abū Bakr ؓ was a man who wept much and could not control his tears when he recited the Qurʾān. So they sent to Ibn al-Daghinnah, and he came to them. They said: We granted Abū Bakr safety only on condition that he worship his Lord in his house, but he has built a mosque and has made public the prayer and recitation, and we fear that he will tempt our women and children. So go to him and tell him to confine himself to worshiping his Lord in his house, and if he refuses except to make that public, then let him return to us your protection, for we dislike breaking your protection and we will not acknowledge for Abū Bakr making it public. So Ibn al-Daghinnah came to Abū Bakr and said: You know what I stipulated for you, so either confine yourself to that or return my protection to me, for I do not like the Arabs to hear that I was treacherous in the pact of a man for whom I made a pact.
