أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ الْجُمَحِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ

كُنَّا فِي جَنَازَةِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ وَمَعَنَا شُعْبَةُ فَلَمَّا دُفِنَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنِي هَذَا وَأَشَارَ إِلَى قَبْرِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ مَنْ حَدَّثَكَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا» فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُغَفَّلِ وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ حَدَّثَنِي فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ الْجَامِعِ

Translation

✧ We were at the funeral of Abū Sufyān b. al-ʿAlāʾ, and Shuʿbah was with us. When he was buried, Shuʿbah said, “This one narrated to me,” and he pointed to the grave of Abū Sufyān b. al-ʿAlāʾ. He said, “I said to al-Ḥasan, ‘Who narrated to you that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Were it not that dogs are a community among the communities, I would have commanded that they be killed”?’ He said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mughaffal, by the One besides whom there is no god, narrated to me in this mosque,’ and he gestured toward the congregational mosque.”
