✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and Muʿādh b. Jabal to Yemen, he commanded that each of us encamp near his companion. He said to us, 'Make things easy and do not make them difficult, give glad tidings and do not repel.' When we stood up, we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling about two drinks we used to make: al-bitʿ from honey, steeped until it becomes strong, and al-mizr from barley and corn, steeped until it becomes strong.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been given comprehensive speech and its conclusions, so he ﷺ said, 'Unlawful for you is every intoxicant that intoxicates and distracts from prayer.' He said, 'One day Muʿādh came to me while I had a man who had been a Jew, then embraced Islam, then reverted to Judaism. He asked me about his situation, so I informed him, and I said to Muʿādh, "Sit down." He said, "I will not sit until I present Islam to him. If he accepts, then fine; otherwise, I will strike his neck." So he presented Islam to him, but he refused to embrace Islam, so he struck his neck. Muʿādh asked me one day, "How do you recite the Qurʾān?" I said, "I recite it standing, sitting, and on my bed, taking it in portions." He said, "I asked Muʿādh, 'How do you recite?' He said, 'I recite and sleep, then I get up and gain strength from my sleep for my standing, then I count my sleep as I count my standing.'"
