✧ A Jew greeted the Prophet ﷺ and his companions and said, "May death be upon you (al-sām ʿalaykum)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you know what he said?" They said, "Yes, he greeted us." He said, "No, he only said, 'May death be upon you,' meaning 'may you be deprived of your religion.' So when a man from the People of the Book greets you, say, 'And upon you.'"
