✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Badr and met the enemy. When Allah defeated them, a group of the Muslims pursued them, killing them; another group surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and another group took possession of the camp and the spoils. When Allah had sufficed against the enemy and those who had pursued them returned, they said, 'The extra share is ours: we pursued the enemy, and by us Allah expelled and defeated them.' The group that had surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By Allah, you are not more entitled to it than we are; it is ours: we surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that the enemy could not catch him off guard.' The group that had taken possession of the camp and the spoils said, 'By Allah, you are not more entitled to it than we are; it is ours.' Then Allah, Exalted, sent down: {They ask you about the spoils} (Qur'an 8:1), the verse. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it among them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give them an extra share of a fourth when they set out as raiders at the beginning of the expedition, and a third when they returned. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a piece of wool from the side of a camel on the day of Hunayn and said, 'O people, it is not lawful for me of what Allah has given you as booty even the amount of this, except the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So render the thread and the needle, and beware of ghulul, for it is a disgrace upon its owner on the Day of Resurrection. And upon you is jihad in the way of Allah, for it is a gate from the gates of Paradise by which Allah removes worry and grief.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked extra shares (anfal) and said, 'Let the strong of the believers return to their weak.'
