✧ A reinforcement fighter in the expedition of Tabuk accompanied them. A Roman was towering over the Muslims and inciting against them. The reinforcement fighter took a subtle position and sat under a rock. When the Roman passed by, he hamstrung his horse, and the Roman fell on the back of his neck. The reinforcement fighter attacked him with the sword and killed him, and came with his saddle, bridle, sword, belt, and weapons. They took the gold and jewels to Khalid b. al-Walid. Khalid took a portion from him and gave him the rest as extra. I said to him: “O Khalid, what is this? Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the entire spoils to the killer?” He said: “Yes, but I considered it too much.” I said: “By the life of Allah, I will make it known to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I told him his story. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and ordered him to give the reinforcement fighter the rest of his spoils. Khalid turned to do it. I said to him: “How do you see, O Khalid, did I not fulfill for you what I promised you?” The Messenger of Allah became angry and said: «O Khalid, do not give it to him, and turn to me.» He said: «Will you leave my commanders alone? You have the best of their affairs, and upon them is its trouble.»

Notes
