✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered on the day of Badr that twenty-four men of the leading nobles of Quraysh be thrown into a dry well of Badr. When he gained victory over a people, he liked to stay in their courtyard for three nights. On the third day, he ordered his riding camel to be saddled; he mounted it, then walked, and his companions followed him. They said, “We think he is going only for some need of his,” until he stood at the edge of the well and began calling them by their names and their fathers’ names: “O so-and-so son of so-and-so, would it please you that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? We have found what our Lord promised us to be true; have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?” ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, ؓ, said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you speak to bodies that have no spirits?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, you are no better at hearing what I say than they are.” Qatādah said, “Allah revived them so that He could make them hear rebuke, belittlement, vengeance, regret, and remorse.”
