✧ We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, unaware of the people who had gathered an army against us. We faced the valley of Ḥunayn in the darkness of dawn—it is a hollow valley among the valleys of Tihāmah; they descend into it steeply. By Allah, the people were moving along, knowing nothing, when suddenly battalions came at them from every side. The people did not wait but fled, turning back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved to the right and said, “Where are you, people? I am the Messenger of Allah, I am Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh.” Before Hawāzin was a huge man on a red camel, holding a black banner: when he caught up with someone, he thrust it; when something escaped before him, he pushed it from behind. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, ؓ, and a man from the Anṣār lay in wait for him, both seeking him. ʿAlī struck the camel’s hamstrings, so it fell on its hindquarters, and the Anṣārī struck his shin, cutting off his foot with half his shin. He fell, and the people fought until the rout came. The maternal brother of Ṣafwān b. Umayyah said, “Indeed, magic is void today.” Ṣafwān b. Umayyah was then a polytheist, during the period the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set for him. Ṣafwān said to him, “Be quiet, may Allah break your mouth! By Allah, a man of Quraysh ruling over me is dearer to me than a man of Hawāzin ruling over me.”
