✧ Anas b. al-Nadr was absent from the fighting at Badr and said, “I was absent from the first battle the Prophet ﷺ witnessed. By Allah, if Allah shows me a fight, He will see what I do.” Then on the day of Uhud, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ were routed, and Saʿd b. Muʿādh came forward saying, “Where? Where? By the One in whose hand is my soul, I find the scent of Paradise before Uhud.” He said, so he charged and fought and was killed. Saʿd said, “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I could not do what he did.” His sister said, “By Allah, I did not recognize my brother except by the beauty of his fingertips.” They found in him eighty-some wounds, from sword strikes, arrow shots, and spear thrusts. Then Allah revealed: “Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some are still waiting, and they have not changed in the least.” Ḥammād said, “And I read in Ubayy’s codex: ‘And among them are those who changed in the least.’”
