✧ We were sitting around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with us were Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, ؓ, in a group. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ got up from among us and was slow to return, so we feared he had been taken from us and became alarmed. I was the first to be alarmed, so I went out following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I came to a garden belonging to the Anṣār, to the Banū al-Najjār. I went around it looking for an entrance and found a stream entering the inside of the garden from its outside—al-rabīʿ means a water channel. I squeezed through and entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: “Abū Hurayrah?” I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: “What brought you?” I said: You got up from among us and were slow to return, so we feared you had been taken from us and became alarmed. I was the first to be alarmed, so I came to this garden and squeezed through as a fox squeezes through, and the people are behind me. He said: “O Abū Hurayrah,” and he gave me his two sandals and said: “Go with these two sandals of mine. Whomever you meet behind this wall who bears witness that there is no god but Allah with certainty in his heart, give him glad tidings of Paradise.” The first person I met was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, ؓ, and he said: What are these two sandals, O Abū Hurayrah? I said: These are the two sandals of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent me with them: whomever I meet behind this wall who bears witness that there is no god but Allah with certainty in his heart, I am to give him glad tidings of Paradise. He said: ʿUmar, ؓ, struck me between my breasts with his hand and I fell on my backside. He said: Go back, O Abū Hurayrah. So I returned to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and burst into tears, and ʿUmar caught up with me on my tracks. The Messenger of Allah said: “What is the matter with you, O Abū Hurayrah?” I said: I met ʿUmar and told him what you sent me with, and he struck me between my breasts such that I fell on my backside, and he said: Go back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O ʿUmar, what made you do that?” He said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, did you send Abū Hurayrah with your sandals to give glad tidings of Paradise to whomever he meets who bears witness that there is no god but Allah with certainty in his heart? He said: “Yes.” He said: Then do not do it, for I fear that people will rely upon it. Leave them to act. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Then leave them.”
