✧ The delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays, when they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: O Messenger of Allah, we are a tribe from Rabīʿah, and between us and you are the disbelievers of Muḍar. We can only reach you during the sacred month, so command us with a matter to which we may call those of our people behind us, and by which we may enter Paradise if we take it up or act upon it. He said: “I command you with four things and forbid you from four: that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, that you establish the prayer, give the zakāh, fast Ramaḍān, and give a fifth of the spoils. And I forbid you from four: from al-dubbāʾ, al-ḥantam, al-muzaffat, and al-naqīr.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you know about al-naqīr? He said: “It is the trunk that you hollow out and cast into it small dates or dates, then pour water over them until it ferments; then when it settles you drink it, and it may lead one of you to strike his cousin with the sword.” He said: Among the people was a man who had such a wound. He said: I used to hide it out of shyness from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: In what do you command us to drink, O Prophet of Allah? He said: “Drink from waterskins of leather whose mouths are tied.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, our land has many rats, and no leather waterskins remain. He said: “Even if the rats eat them,” twice or three times. Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to Ashajj ʿAbd al-Qays: “You have two qualities that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness.”
