✧ Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith and al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib met and said, “By Allah, if we sent these two boys”—meaning me and al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās—“to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he appointed them over these alms, they would pay what people pay and receive the benefit that people receive.” While they were discussing that, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib came and said, “What do you two want?” They told him what they intended. He said, “Do not do it, for by Allah he will not do it.” They said, “Why do you say this? This from you is nothing but envy toward us. By Allah, you have accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and obtained his kinship by marriage, and we did not envy you that.” He said, “I am Abū Ḥasan. Send them.” Then he lay down. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed ẓuhr, we preceded him to the room and stood at it until he passed by us ﷺ. He took hold of our ears and said, “Get out what you are hiding,” and entered. We entered with him, and that day he was in the house of Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh. We spoke to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we came to you so that you may appoint us over these alms, so that we may receive the benefit that people receive and pay to you what people pay.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell silent and raised his head toward the ceiling of the house until we wanted to speak to him. Zaynab gestured to us from behind her screen as if she was telling us not to speak to him. Then he turned and said, “Indeed, alms are not appropriate for Muḥammad or the family of Muḥammad. They are only the impurities of people. Call for me Maḥmiyah b. Juzʾ”—he was in charge of the tithes—“and Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith.” They came, and he said to Maḥmiyah, “Marry this boy to your daughter,” meaning al-Faḍl, and he married him. He said to Abū Sufyān, “Marry this boy to your daughter,” meaning me, and he married me. Then he said to Maḥmiyah, “Pay the dower for them from the fifth.”
