قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ

«أَنَّهُ اجْتَمَعَ لِغَزْوَةِ أَذْرِبِيجَانَ وَأَرْمِينِيَةَ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ وَأَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَتَذَاكَرُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَاخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ حَتَّى كَادَ يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُمْ قِتَالٌ قَالَ فَرَكِبَ حُذَيْفَةُ بْنُ الْيَمَانِ لَمَّا رَأَى اخْتِلَافَهُمْ فِي الْقُرْآنِ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدِ اخْتَلَفُوا فِي الْقُرْآنِ حَتَّى إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَأَخْشَى أَنْ يُصِيبَهُمْ مَا أَصَابَ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى مِنَ الِاخْتِلَافِ فَفَزِعَ لِذَلِكَ عُثْمَانُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فَزِعًا شَدِيدًا وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى حَفْصَةَ فَاسْتَخْرَجَ الصُّحُفَ الَّتِي كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَمَرَ زَيْدًا بِجَمْعِهَا فَنَسَخَ مِنْهَا الْمَصَاحِفَ فَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَى الْآفَاقِ ثُمَّ لَمَّا كَانَ مَرْوَانُ أَمِيرُ الْمَدِينَةِ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى حَفْصَةَ يَسْأَلُهَا عَنِ الصُّحُفِ لِيُمَزِّقَهَا وَخَشِيَ أَنْ يُخَالِفَ بَعْضُ الْعَامِ بَعْضًا فَمَنَعْتُهُ إِيَّاهَا» قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ «لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ حَفْصَةُ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِعَزِيمَةٍ لِيُرْسِلَ بِهَا فَسَاعَةَ رَجَعُوا مِنْ جَنَازَةِ حَفْصَةَ أَرْسَلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ فَحَرَقَهَا مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ اخْتِلَافٌ لَمَّا نَسْخَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ »

✧ It was gathered for the expedition of Adharbijan and Armenia the people of Syria and the people of Iraq, and they discussed the Quran among themselves and differed about it until it almost led to fighting between them. When Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman saw their disagreement about the Quran, he rode to ʿUthman b. ʿAffan and said, 'The people have differed about the Quran until, by Allah, I fear that there will befall them what befell the Jews and Christians of disagreement.' ʿUthman, ؓ, was deeply alarmed and sent to Hafsah to bring out the sheets that Abu Bakr had ordered Zayd to collect, and he copied the mushafs from them and sent them to the regions. Then when Marwan was governor of al-Madinah, he sent to Hafsah asking for the sheets to tear them up, fearing that some parts would contradict others, but she refused to give them to him. Ibn Shihab said: Salim b. ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, 'When Hafsah died, Marwan sent to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar with a firm request to send them. As soon as they returned from Hafsah's funeral, Ibn ʿUmar sent to Marwan, and he burned them, fearing that there might be in something of that disagreement when ʿUthman ؓ copied.'
