What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationMālik was mistaken (wahima) in his saying "and you did not exit the state of iḥrām from your ʿumrah"; no one other than him said it in the ḥadīth of Ḥafṣah.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationHis saying "and you did not exit the state of iḥrām from your ʿumrah": even granting that he was alone in it, it is an addition from a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), so it must be accepted; moreover, he was not alone, for Ayyūb and ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar corroborated him.

machine translationMālik was mistaken (wahima) in his saying "and you did not exit the state of iḥrām from your ʿumrah", and no one other than him said it in the ḥadīth of Ḥafṣah.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translational-Aṣīlī and others inclined to regard Mālik as having erred in his words "and you have not left iḥrām after your ʿumrah," saying that no one other than him said it in the hadith of Ḥafṣah. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr responded: even granting that he was alone in it, it is an addition from a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), so it must be accepted; moreover he was not alone, for Ayyūb and ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar followed him, and both of them are, besides, among the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) of the students of Nāfiʿ.

machine translationNāfiʿ narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar, Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, Mālik b. Anas (may God have mercy on him), Ibn Jurayj, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq and Jaʿfar b. Burqān narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from Ḥafṣah. Nāfiʿ b. Abī Nuʿaym narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ḥafṣah, and did not mention Ibn ʿUmar. Ayyūb b. Mūsā narrated it from Nāfiʿ, from Ṣafiyyah bint Abī ʿUmayr, from one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. The statement of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar and those who followed him is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
