✧ I was concealing myself with the coverings of the Kaʿbah when three men came: a Thaqafī and his two Qurashī in-laws, with abundant fat on their bellies and little understanding. They conversed among themselves. One of them said, “Do you think Allah hears what we say?” Another said, “When we raise our voices He hears, and when we lower them He does not hear.” The other said, “If He hears when we raise our voices, He hears when we lower them.” I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, so Allah revealed: “And you were not concealing yourselves, lest your hearing, your eyes, or your skins testify against you.” [Fussilat:22]
