✧ “When the believer’s soul is taken, the angels of mercy come to it with white silk and say, ‘Come out to the mercy of Allah.’ It comes out with a scent like the finest musk, so that they pass it one to another, smelling it, until they bring it to the gate of heaven. They say, ‘What is this sweet fragrance that has come from the earth?’ And they do not come to any heaven but they say the like of that, until they bring it to the souls of the believers. They rejoice over it more than a family rejoices over its absent member when he returns. They say, ‘What did so-and-so do?’ They say, ‘Leave him until he rests, for he was in the distress of the world.’ He says, ‘Has he died? Did he not die?’ They say, ‘He was taken to his mother, the Pit (al-Hāwiya).’ As for the disbeliever, the angels of punishment come to him with coarse cloth and say, ‘Come out to the wrath of Allah.’ It comes out with the foulest stench of a corpse, and they take it to the gate of the earth.”
