✧ He asked Jabir b. 'Abd Allah about the shortening of prayer in fear: where was it revealed and where is it? He said: We went out to meet a caravan of Quraysh that had come from Syria. When we were at Nakhl, a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his sword was placed down and said, 'Are you Muhammad?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Are you not afraid of me?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then who will protect you from me?' He said, 'Allah protects me from you.' He said, so he drew his sword and threatened him, and the people threatened and intimidated him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the people to depart and take up their weapons. Then he called for prayer, and one group prayed behind him while another group kept guard facing the enemy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs with the group that was with him, then the other group came and stood in the rows of those who had prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the group that had prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept guard facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs with them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had four rak'ahs and his companions had two rak'ahs.
