✧ I heard Abu Hurayrah while Marwan b. al-Hakam asked him about the prayer of fear. Abu Hurayrah said: I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in that expedition. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ split the people into two groups. One group stood with him and the other group stood facing the enemy, with their backs to the qiblah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the takbir, and they all said the takbir — those with him and those fighting the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bowed one rak'ah, and the group that was next to him bowed with him. Then he prostrated and the group that was next to him prostrated, while the others remained standing facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and the group that had prayed with him took their weapons and walked backwards on their heels until they stood facing the enemy. Then the group that had been facing the enemy came forward and bowed and prostrated while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained standing as he was. Then they stood up, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bowed another rak'ah and they bowed with him, and he prostrated and they prostrated with him. Then the group that had been facing the enemy came forward and bowed and prostrated while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, along with those with him. Then came the taslim, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the taslim and they all said the taslim. Thus the people stood up and had shared with him in the prayer.
