✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us one of the two afternoon prayers. Ibn Sirin said, 'Abu Hurayrah named it for us, but I forgot.' He prayed two [units] with us, then said the salutation. Then he stood up to a wooden plank placed across the mosque, placed his right hand over his left, interlaced his fingers, and leaned on the plank as if he were angry. He said: The swift people left. Al-Nadr said, meaning the first of the people. They said, 'Has the prayer been shortened?' Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they were too in awe of him to speak to him. Among the people was a man with long hands called Dhu al-Yadayn. He said, 'Has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The prayer has not been shortened, and I have not forgotten.' Then he said to the people, 'Is it as Dhu al-Yadayn says?' They said, 'Yes.' So he prayed what he had left, then said the salutation. Then he said the takbir and prostrated similar to his prostration or longer. Then he raised his head and said the takbir. Then he said the takbir and prostrated similar to it or longer. Then he raised his head and then said the takbir.

- Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
