أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شُبَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ
«كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ بِالْحَاجَةِ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ} فَأُمِرْنَا بِالسُّكُوتِ»

✧ We used to speak during the prayer about our needs until this verse was revealed: 'Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly obedient.' So we were commanded to remain silent.
