✧ I said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, teach me the sunnah of the adhan." He said: He wiped the front of my head and said: "You say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar," raising his voice with it. Then you say: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah," and lower your voice with it. Then you raise your voice with the testimony: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah," twice, and "hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah; hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah." If it is the morning prayer, you say: "Al-salahu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salahu khayrun min al-nawm; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; la ilaha illa Allah."

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī says that at the beginning of the adhān one says Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, four times, and he held that this is preserved through the transmission of trustworthy (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and the ḥadīth of Abū Maḥdhūrah, and that it is an addition which must be accepted.
in صحيح ابن حبان, p. 1686 - Shafiʿī
machine translationThe fourfold repetition of the takbīr at the beginning of the adhān is well preserved (maḥfūẓ) in the narration of the reliable (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and of Abū Maḥdhūrah. It is an addition that must be accepted, and the practice with them in Mecca, among the family of Abū Maḥdhūrah, followed it down to his time.
