✧ Thumāmah al-Ḥanafī was taken captive. The Prophet ﷺ used to visit him and say: 'What do you have, O Thumāmah?' He would say: 'If you kill, you kill one with blood [i.e., a person of consequence]; if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful; and if you want wealth, you will be given whatever you wish.' He said: The companions of the Prophet ﷺ loved ransom and said: 'What do we gain by killing this man?' Then the Prophet ﷺ passed by him one day and he embraced Islam, so he sent him to the garden of Abū Ṭalḥah and ordered him to bathe, so he bathed and prayed two rakʿahs. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The Islam of your companion has become good.'
