✧ He and al-Ḥurr b. Qays b. Ḥiṣn al-Fazārī disputed about the companion of Mūsā. Ibn ʿAbbās said, “He is al-Khaḍir.” Ubayy b. Kaʿb passed by them, so Ibn ʿAbbās called him and said, “O Abū al-Ṭufayl, come to us, for I and this companion of mine have disputed about the companion of Mūsā, the one about whom Mūsā asked the way to meet him. Have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about him?” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘While Mūsā was among a gathering of the Children of Israel, a man came to him and said to him, “Do you know anyone more knowledgeable than you?” Mūsā said, “No.” Then Allah revealed to Mūsā, “Rather, Our servant al-Khaḍir.” So Mūsā asked the way to meet him. Allah made the fish a sign for him and it was said to him, “When you miss the fish, turn back, for you will meet him.” Mūsā traveled as long as Allah willed him to travel, then he said to his servant, “Bring us our breakfast.” His servant said to Mūsā when he asked for breakfast, “Did you see when we took refuge at the rock? I forgot the fish, and none but Satan made me forget to mention it.” Mūsā said to his servant, “That is what we were seeking.” So they retraced their footsteps, and they found Khaḍir. Then what happened between them was as Allah related in His Book.’”
