The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent four men in four directions: one man to Kisrā, one man to Qayṣar, and one man to al-Muqawqis, and he sent ʿAmr b. Umayyah to the Negus. Each one of them then began to speak in the language of the people to whom he had been sent. When ʿAmr b. Umayyah came to the Negus, he found for them a small door through which they would enter bowing. When ʿAmr saw that, he turned his back and walked backwards. He said: That was hard on the Abyssinians in their assembly with the Negus, until they were about to attack him, and they said to the Negus: This man did not enter as we entered. He said: What prevented you from entering as they entered? He said: We do not do this for our Prophet [1], and if we were to do it for anyone, we would do it for him. He said: He has spoken the truth. He said: Leave him. They said to the Negus: This man claims that ʿĪsā [2] is a slave. He said: What do you say about ʿĪsā? He said: The word of Allah and His spirit. He said: ʿĪsā could not go beyond that.
