Chain of narrators

machine translationʿAbd al-Raḥīm b. Sulaymān narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Saʿīd b. Ḥayyān, from ʿAmmār al-Duhnī, who said: Abū al-Ṭufayl narrated to me, he said:

Machine translation, not reviewed

I was in the army that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib sent to Banū Nājiyah. We reached them and found them in three groups. He said: Our commander said to one group of them: "What are you?" They said: "We are a people who were Christians, then we became Muslims, and we have remained firm in our Islam." He said: "Stand aside." Then he said to the second: "What are you?" They said: "We are [1][a people of the Christians; we have not seen a religion better than our religion, so we have remained firm in it." He said: "Stand aside." Then he said to another group: "What are you?" They said: "We are] [2]a people who were Christians, then we became Muslims, then we went back and did not see a religion better than our religion, so we became Christians again." He said to them: "Become Muslims." They refused. So he said to his companions: "When I wipe my head three times, attack them." They did so, and they killed the fighters and took the children captive. I brought the children to ʿAlī, and Maṣqalah b. Hubayrah came and bought them for two hundred thousand. He brought one hundred thousand to ʿAlī, but he refused to accept it. So Maṣqalah went off with his dirhams, and Maṣqalah set about freeing them, and he joined Muʿāwiyah. It was said to ʿAlī: "Will you not take the children?" He said: "No," and he did not interfere with them.
