That a group of men from Bakr b. Wāʾil apostatized from Islam and joined the polytheists, and they were killed in the fighting. When I came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb with the news of the conquest of Tustar, he said: "What happened to the group from Bakr b. Wāʾil?" He said: I said: I turned to another topic of conversation to distract him from mentioning them. He said: "What happened to the group from Bakr b. Wāʾil?" He said: I said: "They were killed, O Commander of the Believers." He said: "If I had taken them in peace, that would have been dearer to me than everything the sun rises upon of yellow and white [gold and silver]." He said: I said: "O Commander of the Believers, what would their way have been, had you taken them, other than death? They are a people who apostatized from Islam and joined polytheism." He said: "I would have offered them to enter the door from which they had gone out; if they did so, I would have accepted [that] [1] from them, and if they refused, I would have placed them in prison."
