حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ:
لَمَّا كَانَ عَامُ الْجَمَاعَةِ بَعَثَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ بُسْرَ بْنَ أَرْطَاةَ لِيُبَايِعَ أَهْلَهَا عَلَى رَايَاتِهِمْ وَقَبَائِلِهِمْ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ جَاءَتْهُ الْأَنْصَارُ جَاءَتْهُ بَنُو سَلِمَةَ قَالَ [١]: أَفِيهِمْ جَابِرٌ ؟ قَالُوا: لَا، قَالَ: فَلْيُرْجَعُوا فَإِنِّي لَسْتُ مُبَايِعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَحْضُرَ جَابِرٌ، قَالَ: فَأَتَانِي فَقَالَ: نَشَدْتُكَ [٢]اللهَ إِلَّا مَا انْطَلَقْتَ مَعَنَا فَبَايَعْتَ فَحَقَنْتَ دَمَكَ وَدِمَاءَ قَوْمِكَ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ قُتِلَتْ مُقَاتِلَتُنَا وَسُبِيَتْ ذَرَارِيُّنَا، قَالَ: فَاسْتَنْظَرْتُهُمْ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ، فَلَمَّا أَمْسَيْتُ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهَا الْخَبَرَ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، انْطَلِقْ، فَبَايِعْ وَاحْقِنْ دَمَكَ وَدِمَاءَ قَوْمِكَ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ أَمَرْتُ ابْنَ أَخِي يَذْهَبُ فَيُبَايِعُ.

When the Year of the Community came, Muʿāwiyah sent Busr b. Arṭāh to Medina to take the pledge of allegiance from its people according to their banners and their tribes. When the day came that the Anṣār came to him, Banū Salimah came to him. He said: "Is Jābir among them?" They said: "No." He said: "Then let them go back, for I will not take their pledge until Jābir is present." He (Jābir) said: So he came to me and said: "I adjure you by God, come with us and pledge allegiance, so that you spare your blood and the blood of your people. For if you do not, our fighters will be killed and our children will be taken captive." He said: So I asked them for time until the night. When evening came, I went in to Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and told her the news. She said: "O son of my brother, go and pledge allegiance, and spare your blood and the blood of your people. For I have commanded my nephew to go and pledge allegiance."
