حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَلِّمٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ عَنْ عَامِرٍ، قَالَ:
أَتَى رَجُلٌ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، عِدَتُكَ الَّتِي وَعَدْتَنِي ؟ قَالَ: وَمَا وَعَدْتُكَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنْ تَزِيدَنِي مِائَةً فِي عَطَائِي، قَالَ: مَا فَعَلْتُ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، قَالَ: مَنْ يَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ الْأَسْوَدُ - أَوِ ابْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ - قَالَ: مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا يَا ابْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَدْ زِدْتَهُ، فَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِهَا، ثُمَّ إِنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ ضَرَبَ بِيَدَيْهِ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَى فَقَالَ: مَا بِي مِائَةٌ زِدْتُهَا رَجُلًا، وَلَكِنْ [بِي غَفْلَتِي] [٢]أَنْ أَزِيدَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ مِائَةً ثُمَّ أَنْسَاهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَهُوَ آمِنٌ عَلَيْهَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَوَاللهِ مَا زِدْتَهُ شَيْئًا، وَلَكِنَّهُ لَا يَدْعُونِي رَجُلٌ إِلَى خَيْرٍ يُصِيبُهُ مِنْ ذِي سُلْطَانٍ إِلَّا شَهِدْتُ لَهُ بِهِ، وَلَا شَرٍّ أَصْرِفُهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ ذِي سُلْطَانٍ إِلَّا شَهِدْتُ لَهُ بِهِ

A man came to Muʿāwiyah and said: "O Commander of the Believers, your promise that you promised me?" He said: "And what did I promise you?" He said: "That you would increase my stipend by one hundred." He said: "I did not do that." He said: "Indeed you did." He said: "Who knows that?" He said: "al-Aswad - or Ibn al-Aswad." He said: "What is this man saying, O Ibn al-Aswad?" He said: "Yes, you increased it for him." So he ordered it for him. Then Muʿāwiyah struck one of his hands against the other and said: "It is not the hundred that I added for a man that troubles me, but [my heedlessness] that I might increase a man from the Muhājirūn by a hundred and then forget it." Ibn al-Aswad said to him: "O Commander of the Believers, is he then secure about it?" He said: "Yes." He said: "By God, you did not add anything for him, but no man calls me to some good that he may receive from one in authority except that I testify for him to it, and no evil that I may turn away from him from one in authority except that I testify for him to it."
